Bug Description

I reported this in January, but it seems to have re-appeared after yesterday's clean installation. Yesterday, I took the new daily build after I received news that the alpha release was ready. I installed it after formatting the drive, and the top menus worked fine. I used Libreoffice writer a number of times yesterday, and again this morning. I did no further update+upgrade, but after several sessions, the menus were no longer to be seen. I can live with it until the final release, but thought I ought to mention it.

I'm told I should have reported it as a Unity bug. Do you want me to re-report as such?

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 1539939

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

I have the same behavior. After a clean install of 16.04 beta, libreoffice works fine menu in main panel show up. After a few times opening and closing libreoffice the main menu disappears.

After a fresh re-install of 16.04 beta 1, it works again for a few moments before it disappears again.

After last updates menus disappeared also in gedit, shotwell, image viewer ....

The "unity" command must be run after each start to make them appear, however sometimes there are some errors and all unity panels disappear. Thanks!

Just a comment on re-running "unity" as a command - it sometimes fails to finish the command. The output on T420s (Intel graphics) x64 xenial is enclosed. Thanks.

Reinstalled from last daily, menus appeared once at 1st login, then disappeared again. 'unity' command solves the problem but hangs each time; see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1555633

I have just seen this bug on a as of today fully updated xenial. After logging out and in of the session the menus came back.

Steve (t-steve-q) wrote :

Same as Walter Carcia-Fontes -- fully updated xenial install (standard Unity). No menu, but after logging out and in, menu available on Libreoffice.

Steve (t-steve-q) wrote :

I have received the following email. Could someone explain why this is necessary?

"Steve ... Did you not see my note on the bug report? The bug was fixed ages ago. Updating will continue to show the bug. The ONLY cure is to completely wipe the drive, or the two partitions if you have anything else on the drive, and do a complete re-install. That bug carries through all updates and other attempts to get rid if it. I had to do this over a three months ago, and the bug has not re-appeared. Currently, there is a bug in ubiquity. You need to use fdisk to get rid of the swap partition before re-installing."

Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote :

Steve,

This is a bullshit mail. There is a bug and it should be fixed.

Same problem in Ubuntu 16.04, the weird thing is than in my Workstation this bug is present but not in my laptop.

Eugene Romanenko (eros2) wrote :

I have this issue on both desktop and laptop (16.04 on both).
Observations:
1. Firefox/Thunderbird always have menus, while regular gtk programs (nautilus, gnome-terminal) are not. So, issue in some gtk component. Not tried qt apps.
2. When I boot PC/laptop and then login - issue mostly present. Then I end session and relogin - issue gone.
3. When I boot PC/laptop and not login for some time (several minutes) - then login - no issue.

Sean V Kelley (seanvk) wrote :

This issues affects me on both desktop and laptop running 16.04. As mentioned by @eros2 above, I can work around that issue by ending session and logging back in.

b-drake: "It must be hardware specific" - unsure, as my desktop have amd cpu and nvidia video with nvidia proprietary drivers, while my laptop is intel cpu with intel video. So very different hardware but same bug.

Ubuntu 16.04 - Xenial Xerus
This begun happening a while ago in my computer. I just did not felt strange because i felt to search for possible updates and in fact they was there and download them. After restart the computer the libreoffice had again the top toolbar menu. After a while it disappear again.
I did not felt strange because I know that I am in a pre-release system, but seeing this now I felt to describe this here.

The bug is still present in a fresh install of Final Beta
Unity version - 7.4.0+16.04.20160322-0ubuntu1

For some reason indicator-appmenu is crashing during session boot. Manually starting it or reloading session solves the problem.

On my desktop i have 2 Xenial installed in 2 different partitions. The problem appears allways, immediately after login on the Xenial installed in partition p3, but does not appear in the Xenial in partition p10. So I imagine the problem is NOT hardware dependent. I attached the inxi output from for both partitions. Should i run apport-collect 1539939 from both partitions?

sorry for my comment #38. today i see the problem on both installations on sda3 and sda10.

Mine went missing for the last three days - they came bace again with this morning's updates. There are still a lot of updates every day.

all updates installed but still disappear every boot, always need to use unity command to show menu again

Hanine HAMZIOUI (hanynowsky) wrote :

Same annoying Bug Here.
Only firefox is untouched!

GTK apps get their menus disappear. I am forced to use the HUD or run $~ unity
command to make them appear again.
I can't believe this bug leaked to the official LTS RElease.

I upgraded from Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04 LTS yesterday and did an update today but the bug remains.

vexorian (vexorian) wrote :

I am experiencing this.
* Fresh 16.04 install.
* First login menus worked correctly.
* Doesn't seem specific to the menu in the top panel. I am using the option to make menu bars show in window title bars and permanently.
* This seems to only happen with gnome apps. GIMP, Firefox, Inkscape, Chrome all work fine. Their menu bars show up in title bars when not maximized and in top panel when maximized. This fails with gnome apps like gnome-terminal, gedit or nautilus.
* Using the HUD I can still access the application's menu options.
* Running 'unity' also fixes the problem for me.

Multibrelch (mulbrelch) wrote :

Same here, I experience exactly the same as described by vexorian (vexorian) and Hanine HAMZIOUI (hanynowsky) .

Some further comments:
- when executing 'unity' in a terminal, menus become visible. However, upon boot, they are gone again.
- my system: Ubuntu 16.04, 64 Bit, GPU: nVidia GeForce 8400M GS

Ginny Morris (gmorris15) wrote :

Same here; I'm also experiencing the same issue described by Vexorian. Many of my application menus are missing in 16.04 LTS. Thanks for the temporary fix, Vexorian. Running Unity restores the menus for me, but I don't know for how long.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (fresh install), 64 bit, I7 Processor, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M

Mike Jelfs (mike-jelfs) wrote :

Having the same issue her with Libreoffice - typing unity into the terminal does fix it for the session but a bit annoying having to do this after each reboot.

Please, follow the steps mentioned in comment 65 of the actual bug report for this (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1532226/comments/65) and report back there.

Thanks

I have two computers running Ubuntu 16.04. One is an upgrade, the other is a clean install. On the clean install the menus do not show up on any of my windows every time I reboot my machine, even with the option checked in Settings:Appearance:Behavior:Show the menus for a window

However, I have found a temporary workaround for this, but I had to put it in my Startup Applications. I created a new startup program with the following parameters:
Name: Reload Unity
Command: unity
Comment: Unity has windowing menu problems so it needs to be reloaded after bootup

Now when I reboot, I have all my window menus.

It's either the Startup Application or run terminal every time I reboot to restart unity. On my other machine, the one that I upgraded 14.04 to 16.04, it happens so rarely I just added a custom launcher to Cairo-Dock that would reload unity.
