Bug Description

After locking the screen via ctrl-alt-del, upon unlocking it, the "Hi $user, you have open files that you might want to save before logging out" is stuck in the middle of the screen. It will not close or allow typing in any window. The only way out is to kill the X server or reboot the machine losing all open work.

After running into several other situations where one of these logout/lock screen dialogs got wedged and I had to reboot, and after losing all my work several times because the default ctrl-alt-del action is to log out rather than lock the screen as it has been in Windows forever, I just set ctrl-alt-del to lock the screen with no prompts or dialogs. So I guess you can close this though I still think this area of ubuntu is poorly implemented

I don't know how I could reproduce this consistently, but I'm affected by this bug. Shortly after encountering it I had a crash that seemed to restart the display manager/X entirely, so I'm sure state was lost, but if there's any information on what to do to properly gather information on a bug like this I'd be happy to help.

Setting status to confirmed since someone other than the reporter has encountered the bug.

For reference, what happened to me is that after I unlocked my desktop, the "You have unsaved files, do you want to lock screen or log out" window was superimposed on my desktop, darkening windows underneath it with a gradient. I could interact with other windows, but couldn't interact with the lock/unlock dialog in any way. I tried using xkill to kill it, but this just clicked underneath the window and killed either Nautilus or whatever else gets killed if you select the desktop with xkill.

For me this issue occured when I also had the #815996 bug. I was able to workaround the first but then got stuck with this logout window.

But Workaround found! Simply click "Turn off..." (or whatever it is in english version) and the logout window will be replaced by the turn off window, which will be possible to close normally. At least this worked for me, just when I had given up... :)
