Bug Description

This is possible related to Bug #1352231

When using Unity windows aren't rendered or updated. In LXDE everything works fine.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Log into Unity
2. Open a Window

What should happen:
The window is shown & I can interact with it.

What actually happens:
Only the Mouse-Cursor changes. I can only see anything happened after running "unity --replace". For every Update(Window movement, ...) I have to repeat "unity --replace" in order to see the changes.

When did this regression happen:
Last known working configuration was 28 July 2014.

The problem started with the update to linux kernel "3.13.0-20-generic",
where temporarily fixed by booting "3.13.0-19-generic" but it seems like every kernel is "affected" since now this "workaround" doesn't help either.

OK, thanks to this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=887492#p887492
I found that creating the attached file in my home directory fixes this bug.

to test this try:
vblank_mode=0 glxgears
on a alternative Window-Manager like lxde. If it shows rotating gears, then this "fix" will probably work.

Changed in unity (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Critical
