On Trusty, Terminal commands calling apps do not work

Bug Description

After recent updates to Trusty, Terminal commands calling apps do not work e.g. gedit now does nothing (i.e. just returns a prompt within Terminal) though it loads properly when called from the Dash.

Workaround:
sudo apt-get install --purge --reinstall gedit
allows gedit from Terminal.
