I've been suffering this bug for months now. Today I noticed some issues with window animations before it happened, and it came to my mind that it might be compiz-related. I killed compiz and the login screen was gone, without losing the unity session. It's the first time that I manage to go back to my session without losing the data.
This is a Sony Vaio running Ubuntu 14.04.1 with dual monitor.
After that, when the screen lock appeared again, the password field was there.
This seems to me a better workaround than unity --replace, if it proves to work consistently. Worth trying it.
