Bug Description

Since upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10 (beta) I can no longer launch applications by searching them in the dash (topmost entry in the launcher bar). Whatever I enter as a search term, the spinning circle rotates, rotates, without ever showing any results. No message about "nothing found", either. Launching applications from the command line or from the launcher bar works just fine.

To make sure we talk about the same I made a screenshot, please find it attached.

I tried to remove everything in $HOME/.cache, no change.

Then I ran unity in a terminal:

$ unity

I have the same issue after upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10. The DASH doesn't work.
I got the following message when I run unity --replace in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall unity-lens-* unity-scope-home

fixed that for me. Maybe not all packages are needed.

Timo,
thanks!! that fix for me too!

Excellent hint. Thank you, @Timo.

As your command installs all available lenses --ther're a ton of them--, I opened Synaptic and tried with reinstalling only the already installed ones.

- Reinstalling the existing unity-lens-* changed nothing.

- Looking at unity-scope-home showed this wasn't installed at all. Installing it also newly installed unity-scopes-master-default and after that, searching in the dash worked fine again.

Accordingly, the following command should be sufficient:

    sudo apt-get install unity-scope-home

This makes me wonder wether it's perhaps just a missing dependency.

I'm also affected from this problem. Install unity-scope-home fix it.

After I read comment #8, I run this command :
peat@peat-mac-ubuntu:~$ aptitude why unity-scope-home
i unity Recommends unity-scope-home
As if unity-scope-home isn't install, unity will not worked correctly, is it should be "Depends on"?

FYI, my upgrade to Saucy was interrupted, so I continue upgrade by run "sudo apt-get -f install" and then "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade". I also upgrade another computer and it works fine. Is this related?

I also had an interrupted install of Saucy, and had to install unity-scope-home by hand, just as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1238929/comments/10 did. It worked.
