Bug Description

Upgraded to 13.10 and there's a strange issue with the global menu - the one in the panel - it isn't consistent for all applications. For example GIMP is missing it's menu at the top of the panel and instead has it below the panel. Screenshot included. wanted to know if it's supposed to be that way or if there's a fix, thanks...

It looks like appmenus have stopped working entirely for GTK-based applications in a recent update.

Since I downgraded to 13.04 I will have to wait to upgrade after the stable 13.10 release is available and re-test, generate the logs and see if this still exists.

I am experiencing this as well. After upgrade I the package appmenu-gtk and appmenu-gtk3 are no longer installed and when I try to install them, I receive this error:

Package appmenu-gtk3 has no available version, but exists in the database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents of sources.list

I am attaching my unity-panel-service.log if it helps.

I had teh same issue, but turns out that the following two packages were not installed:

unity-gtk-module-common unity-gtk3-module

The following fixed it for me:

sudo apt-get install unity-gtk-module-common unity-gtk3-module

On side note why this has happened to me is cause of this bug during the upgrade:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tex-common/+bug/1241563

Which broke my upgrade progress, I was only able to continue it with sudo apt-get install -f which most likefly failed to install new packages as it didn't know about them

It seems to me the panel menu stops working after using it in GIMP. First menu's are reacting very slow, then it desappears. (for all applications).
It takes some time and then it re-appears again.

I have the requested log attached.

I have the same problem, does anybody need some more log information to make a finale descision about this bug. As far as I understand the comments here downgrading to a lower gimp version will not solve the problem.

In Reply to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1221304/comments/8 :

sudo apt-get install unity-gtk-module-common unity-gtk3-module

did not fix it for me because alle packages were uptodate.
