Bug Description

This is an up to date (13 Oct 2012) 12.10 install on an HP Folio 13 notebook (i5-2467M CPU @ 1.60GHz, 4GB RAM, using the integrated Intel GPU).
Opening the dash and typing in the search bar is very slow (can't give numbers, but typing feels like beeing connected by ssh to a machine at the other end of the world).

My setup has two monitors (laptop's and an external one). With only one monitor the situation is slightly better, but still far from being acceptable.

You're actually reporting two bugs so I'm making this about one of them. Please report the other elsewhere ("When moving windows with the mouse, the movement is smooth as long as the window does not go under the launcher.")

I think the primary issue here with the slowness with extra monitors is bug 1064834, which slows down proportionally to the desktop size. I'm testing on an identical HP Folio 13 and it's nice and fast with no monitor plugged in.

Maybe we should just say this bug is incomplete until bug 1064834 is Fix Released. Then if the problem persists, this can be treated separately.

While bug 1064834 is fixed, and I am running with an updated nux package, the problem still persists: dash "fade appears/disappears" very slowly and typing is (unusably) slow in it. This only affects a multiple monitor set-up (it runs fine and without slowdowns with a single monitor).

Sorry folks, but as part of the bug clean up ahead of 16.04 I'm marking this as invalid because it affects an Ubuntu release which is now unsupported. If you can still recreate this bug in a supported release please do open a new bug and we can triage it for consideration in the 16.04 development cycle.
