Bug Description

After about 2 weeks I updated my 12.04 64b Ubuntu and after restart mentioned icons are missing, see screenshot [1]. I tried "unity --replace" and even "unity --reset" but no luck. I can provide more information if needed (at least until I'll give up and reinstall ubuntu). I'm using the default unity (3d ?)

Same problem here, 32-bit system.

I have noticed that kernel 3.5.0-4 is mentioned everywhere I read about this bug, and it also happens to be the kernel I'm running.

Can everybody confirm they're running kernel 3.5.0-4? In that case I think we have nailed the culprit..

I don't think so, I tried some older kernel (3.3 or 3.2? sorry, I'm on other PC) via grub menu "Previous versions of Ubuntu" (again not 100% sure about the exact msg) and it happens there as well

At least I'm on 3.5.0-4 as well (on x64). But I suspect most people are on that kernel due to xorg-edgers pulling that kernel in, at least that's how I believe I got it. The only reason I did add the xorg-edgers PPA was to get decent driver support for my ATI card, and on my non-ATI machines which I also keep up to date that kernel is nowhere to be seen.

No, as far as I can test it only happens with xorg-edgers; Quantal is fine. So I don't know that we really need a Lauchpad bug for this. At the least, I think we should be a lot clearer that this is a bug from an experimental PPA, and I changed the subject line to show it.

[SOLVED] Thanks Edward. I check it out here, give a ppa-purge to the xorg-edgers and everything back to normal.

Also affected and using Kernel 3.5 from edgers. Can't purge since otherwise I am left with poor hardware support for my laptop. Will rather just live with no icons until a fix is released :)

Oops! I would cut part of that last post, if I could. The drivers-only archive is long out of date. Sorry, I had seen the description, but only followed through and looked at the packages after I posted. I'm going to try this new 'hide comment' button, to see if I can hide that post and put up a fixed version.

(Second try on this post)

It's probably good for everyone to keep an eye on https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa . Right now it says:

"July 13th: Mesa currently has problems with unity where the launcher icons are invisible, it's suggested to hold mesa back to the 0529 version, stop using this PPA, or use another session such as gnome or unity-2d until it is fixed."

So people who want to stick with the edgers drivers should try downgrading the mesa packages first. You may still have them on your system, under /var/cache/apt/archives , or you might find them by poking around the ppa. Hope this helps.

For others' reference, the exact command to install the old mesa release on 12.04 is:

Using Unity 12.04 LTS on Intel i3, this or something similar has happened to me. Suddenly the launcher has gone, replaced by a thin grey line. I may have pressed some magic combination of keys without realising it (but what combination). Flyouts for some of the icons appear when the mouse cursor is over the launcher panel, but about halfway between the cursor and the top of the panel. Problem persists across reboot. Unable to switch to started applications (except by luck: eg, in the top half of the launcher). Can get Ubuntu Home and start a selected application, but they seem to disappear (eg, into the invisible launcher icon ?)
Suggestions for a workaround / recovery anyone. Must stress that system has been working OK for about six months and this has happened witou obvious cause.

This or a similar bug is still sporadically affecting me. As for Hamil, no obvious cause, no recent upgrade. The only path to fix is to reatart the machine (is this an approach to fix Bug 1 by immitation?).

This bug may be "fixed" in quantal, but it is most definitely /not/ fix released in 12.04, the LTS release.

I use 12.04 on an intel IVB laptop at work and have been patiently waiting for a fix for 12.04 to be released for 6 months now. My laptop works fine for a week or so, and then randomly the unity icons disappear and I need to reboot to get them back. According to comment #28 , I can downgrade mesa to 8.0.2 from main (instead of updates) and it will work again, but then I'm not getting mesa updates (which assumedly helps for intel IVB graphics, especially with docking/undocking stability, iirc).

The current mesa version installed on 12.04 (from updates) is below, and exhibits this behavior:

Is there a way to mark this package as fixed for quantal but not for precise? Or is the official answer for LTS support is to upgrade to 12.10, which isn't LTS?, or run another desktop shell?. This is a rather big black eye for ubuntu when I try to convince others to use it..

Or am I completely missing something, which is always a possibility...

Got to add a note here. Equally suddenly and inexplicably, the launcher has re-appeared. I *may* have been momentarily doing an incorrect drag and drop in a Firefox window, but not sure. Whatever it is, it is definitely a bug.

And equally unexplicably, mine has gone again. How on earth can this be tagged as fixed. If LTS does not mean fixes are released for it, what does LTS actually mean. Without a launcher, what is the point of unity?

It was closed because this this specific bug was fixed a long time ago, just because your symptoms match doesn't mean its the same bug, it could be a regression in newer versions. This isn't a generic bug for rendering problems when using xorg-edgers, please do file new bugs if you do decide to use that PPA. clemej: Regarding unity stopping showing the launcher after some time (I'm guessing 24 days uptime?) that was fixed in 5.18.0-0ubuntu2 which went into precise-updates *today*.
