Bug Description

With Unity 5.12 on both Precise 32 bits and 64 bits, there is a major window management bug with the last Unity 5.12 update: when running several instances of one same application (for instance, several Firefox windows opened in the same time), clicking on the corresponding icon in the launcher doesn't scale the different windows anymore.

As a result, minimized windows just disappear from the screen, with no way to get them back.

The very useful "minimize on click" patch doesn't work anymore too.

I forgot to mention that this is directly correlated to Unity 5.12; everything worked fine with Unity 5.10 (when Precise was released).

thanks for the report. I am on a fully updated precise install and seems the issue does not happen for me. Could you please run unity --reset in a terminal and see if that fixes the issue for you. I believe we have not witnessed a second occurance of the issue in any other report so it could be a config fault somewhere in your setup or a hiccup somewhere.

Hi,
Yes unity --reset does fix the issue as long as it's running in the terminal; but as soon as I close
it, the bug gets back again. Only Unity 5.10 works fine, with the same config.
Also, I have reported the bug on the Ubuntu French forum, and some other users seem to have the same
problem.

Ok sorry, I got it: it's related to the number of workspaces. If I set them to 1 (1 horizontal and 1
vertical) in MyUnity for instance, then it bugs; as soon as I set it to more than 1, it works fine.
But I use only one workspace, so having the switching icon in the launcher is no use for me.

thanks for the report. Could you please enable precise-proposed repository and install the latest version of Unity from their (5.12-0ubuntu1.1) relogin and check if you see the issue. I am not able to reproduce the issue here.

I have enabled the precise-proposed repository, and the issue is still there with unity 5.12-0ubuntu1.1.

I recently created a second user account and I noticed that Clicking on the corresponding icon in the launcher scales the different windows properly. Sadly this problem still affects my primary account.

I usually don't switch between workspaces. But I just tested several different workspaces and my primary account still won't let me click on an icon and scale the multiple documents properly while my new user account will scale properly, on all workspaces.

This only occur when setting the number of workspaces to 1 (= 1 vertical and 1 horizontal) in
MyUnity or Ubuntu Tweak.

@Manuel: what GW wrote, there is a known issue when the number of workspaces is 1, though your comment suggest that you have several workspaces? "just tested several different workspaces"

I don't use MyUnity or Ubuntu Tweak and this bug affects me. It started after a recent update to the unity panel.

@Sebastien: Sorry, I thought you were asking if this bug persisted across several workspaces. I usually never switch between workspaces but I tested different workspaces to try to answer the question I thought you had asked. I take it the majority of people with this bug have disabled workspace switching?

@Manuel: there is a known issue if your number of workspace set to 1, is that your case (in case the bug is a duplicate) or not (in case it's a bug specific to your config it seems)

@Sebastien: Do you mean have I disabled workspace switching? no I have not. My setup is the default setup that came with the Ubuntu 12.04 download. I have not altered it in any way. Originally I could scale multiple instances of the same app without any problems, and then after a software update, this functionality ceased operating.

what happens if you click the workspace icon on the launcher? is winkey-W working for you?

For me the issue appeared only with the unity update to version 5.12. Before the update, when still
using version 5.10 (when 12.04 was release in April), I could set the number of workspaces to 1 (in
order to hide the workspace switching icon and save some space in the launcher) and everything was
fine with the scaling of opened windows.

@Sebastien: when I click on the workspace icon in the launcher I get 4 tiled miniture workspaces. And yes the winkey-w does work but I find it inconvienient and prefer to use the mouse to switch between multiple open documents and applications.

According to comment #18, for GW the problem seems to occur when the number of workspaces is set to 1. And since GW is the original reporter of this bug, that makes it a duplicate of bug 996604.

Yes I do confirm this is exactly the same bug.

I would also greatly appreciate a possibility to remove the workspace switcher icon from the
launcher and save up some space.
