Thanks for your bug report and help to make ubuntu better.
I'm not very sure of what happened as the weird message seems a rather broken dpkg output or something related (no trace in DpkgTerminalLog). Can you try to dist-upgrade to latest version (there is a recent one) to check if the error still occurs, please?
