onboard doesn't appear though menu shows it's running

Bug Description
On a fully updated precise system:
I configured onboard to automatically show when text input is required (dunno the exact english name, using german langpacks) etc.
the menu in the top right says onboard running (screen keyboard is ticked) but it's not there. to make it appear i have to click on the screen keyboard menu twice: uncheck, then check again and then onboard appears.
i am not trying too long to get ubuntu running on this machine, so i didn't see it working until now.
