login screen no text input possible in password field

When the login screen appears, sometimes it is not possible to fill in a password.
The keyboard works, tested by using the mouse and then the arrows.
When the virtual keyboard switch is used, the input works again.

Unable to type a password once unity-greeter presents itself. Using mouse to click on the password field, or switch user and then back doesn't not help.

Clicking the upper left icon for restart/shutdown, and then clicking back on the password field then allows typing of the password.
