USB keyboard and mouse don't respond at login screen but work once logged in

When I arrived at work this morning, I found that I couldn't log in to my laptop with my keyboard and mouse. The laptop keyboard and trackpad work, but not my peripherals. However, once I am logged in to Unity, I am able to use them without issue, and switch to TTYs and so on. This only started today, and multiple reboots didn't resolve.

Which greeter do you use? To me it sounds more like an issue with the greeter than lightdm itself.

Hi Gunnar,

I'm using all the defaults. This is a relatively fresh install of Ubuntu
12.04, and I'm using Unity and whatever greeter came with the default
install.
