Bug Description

In the 'Screen Display' app, it correctly detects my monitor and presents me with the option of its highest resolution '1920x1200 (16:10)'.

If I select that option and click apply, something goes wrong. I get an error message or two indication some failure to apply the resolution, but it seems like the mouse is behaving as if the resolution has actually changed - ie all the UI elements aren't where they are visually and I have to move the mouse around seeing when the buttons become highlighted in order to click them.

This had me believing that the graphics hardware in this (admittedly limited) laptop wasn't able to drive such a high resolution as a second monitor (even though I had disabled the laptop's one).

However, after a while, I found out that simply unplugging the monitor, and plugging it back in again (in true IT Crowd fashion) fixed the problem and it all works 'just fine'. This fact, has me believing it is something wrong with the software, hence this bug report.

The laptop is a Lenovo S10-3t, 1.9GiB RAM, Intel Atom CPU N450 @ 1.66GHz x 2, *Graphics is Intel Pineview M*, and disk is 155.3GB. OS is Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. (NB, it's quite irritating that I can't select that information from the 'Details' setting window!). Monitor is an HP L2335 :

but it behaves similarly with a BenQ GW2765HT LED IPS which isn't at my current location and I can't recall what resolution it fails at (but it was similar, and not the 2560x1440).

The Lenovo S10-3t has a VGA output, and for the HP I am using a VGA-VGA cable, with a VGA-DVI adaptor into the monitor's DVI port. On the BenQ, I used a straight VGA-VGA cable into the monitor's VGA port. The behaviour was similar on both, so I figured this isn't important, but mention it anyway.
