Bug Description

Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 AMD64 with latest updates, running Unity 2D
Intel Core 2 Duo
NVidia Quadro NVS 110M (nvidia-current)
--

When using the Radiance theme, there seem to be a few graphical issues in the Unity 2D Panel. The text in there all has some kind of green pixely noise around it, while images don't. I suspect it has something to do with subpixeling, but that's just a wild guess.
Also, when I open the dash, when using the Radiance theme, the text and icons in the panel stay dark, which makes them hard to see.
Another little thing: I don't know if it's supposed to be like that, but when using the Radiance theme, all panel icons become dark *appart from the account menu thingy*, which stays light.

Confirming the bug in 12.04 LTS final release version with all recent updates installed. Bug appears in two different desktop settings using Radiance theme.

Pixeled fonts seem to be present on Unity 3D too. But it is less visible then in Unity 2D.

For test open nautilus. Then open "View" pop-up menu. While "View" menu is selected/highlighted, "View" text becomes crisp without pixel noise around it.

Above described test case is much more visible in Unity 2D.

So there is also a problem in Unity 3D and I think it is the same bug as in 2D.

It seems that this is a bug in RGBA anti-aliasing. If you change anti-aliasing to grayscale, the bug disappears.

Anti-aliasing settings can be changed in Ubuntu Tweak or in MyUnity under Fonts section.

I first thought this was a pure duplicate of bug 979756, but I realize the "Badly visible text and icons when dash is open" part of this report is likely a separate issue.

I'm going to tweak the bug title slightly to make this more clear. If you are affected by both of the issues reported in this bug, you may want to also mark 979756 as affecting you.

summary: - Coloured pixels around panel text when using Radiance theme + Wrong
- colours in panel when dash opened
+ Wrong colours in panel when dash opened + coloured pixels around panel
+ text when using Radiance theme

I am attaching a video. Notice how the greenness is not visible when a panel item is selected.

The greenness can be easily fixed by removing text shadow.

To do that, open /usr/share/themes/Radiance/gtk-3.0/apps/unity.css
and add "text-shadow: none;" inside
.unity-panel.menubar,
.unity-panel .menubar {
}

so you get :

.unity-panel.menubar,
.unity-panel .menubar {
    text-shadow: none;
}

I also experience this with adawaita on gnome-shell. O=Perhaps this hints at a deeper problem? Screenshot attached - note pixellation of my name in top right and other characters elsewhere. I use proprietary amd, persists after fresh install and using open source driver.

Marking as duplicate of LP: #723167 because it refers to the same issue and nobody is working in Unity 2D. And the GNOME Shell issue is unrelated.
