unity-panel-ser segfaults when volume control accessed

unity-2d (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

The following two lines are from two instances of this, which is 100% repeatable simply by moving the mouse over the volume icon in the unity panel.

Jan 27 13:01:55 orca kernel: [ 2771.859725] unity-panel-ser[3348]: segfault at 10 ip 002b2ee6 sp bf8f7690 error 4 in libgdk-3.so.0.200.0[289000+76000]
Jan 27 13:02:34 orca kernel: [ 2811.057158] unity-panel-ser[6858]: segfault at 10 ip 0031bee6 sp bff44470 error 4 in libgdk-3.so.0.200.0[2f2000+76000]

The system is running and enforced Unity 2D even though standard Unity is chosen on login. This is clearly due to running on a dual monitor configuration.

I should have added that this started immediately after libgtk-3-bin:i386 (3.2.0-0ubuntu3, 3.2.0-0ubuntu4) was updated when I installed it on Start-Date: 2012-01-24 15:06:16, so there is clearly a change in this package that is triggering the fault.

It's happens with amd64 too.

I tried to downgrade libgtk-3-bin to 3.2.0-0ubuntu2 but the problem still exists.

TooDiesel (zotovd) wrote :

This is happening to me too, running dual monitors on 11.10 oneiric amd64, have amdcccle enabled and am using Xinerama. I also have my screens rotated vertically. It's happening in both Unity 2d and Unity sessions.

Confirmed, I get this as well.

Also, as a side affect, i can no longer use the 'hot' corners when moving windows.

I also get a very similiar(related?) segfault when hovering over the sound icon in unity 2d:
[ 50.587553] unity-panel-ser[1679]: segfault at 10 ip 00139ee6 sp bff77750 error 4 in libgdk-3.so.0.200.0[110000+76000]

Though I'm not running multiple monitors. Instead I've disabled compositing in xorg.conf with
     Option "Composite" "Disable"

And also I have added a few workspaces to metacity settings with gconf-editor.

rvm (rvm) wrote :

I don't use a dual monitor either, but I do have Composite disabled. If I enable Composite the problem doesn't happen.

I can confirm that enabling Composite fixed the problem for me.

Changed in unity-2d (Ubuntu):
