Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

Current daily build Live defaults to "Unity" desktop setting for Radeon Mobility 7500.
Unity 3D does not work on this video.
Forums say Unity 3D isn't even on the Live .iso
Live should default to Unity 2D which works. (yes bugs, but at least displays and does some things with launchers.

Thanks for your report.

According to the logs, the system correctly fell back on unity-2d. I'm moving the report there. Could you please provide a picture of your screen to see what type of screen corruption you're experiencing?

Thanks in advance.

Ubuntu-bug requires a fully running system including X and desktop and internet browser.

There's no way to do ubuntu-bug from Ctrl-Alt-F1 and get to the browser if the desktop is borked.

Yes, from command line Ctrl-Alt-F1 I can run a report, but then when I log on from a desktop that will work, the Ubuntu bug shooter says they can't use the report.

So what I did, like just now, booted the 06 June daily build, gets a blue screen which then turns to a red screen.

Absolutely no way to file a ubuntu-bug report from there since "red screen" does not support a browser.

So I did Ctrl-Alt-Del, did a logout, did a login as user looked at the desktop which said Ubuntu. That's the problem. If I log in I get red screen since there's no Ubuntu support in the Live code.

I then selected Ubuntu 2D which works since Live has the code for that and enables me to write this comment. Then I did ubuntu-bug which works, and that is likely what you see on the default desktop. Is there any way for you to see what the initial default was as booted? I looked at /var/log/syslog but I don't know enough about boot scripts to see anything. Is there another log which would show what the default desktop is?

Let me try to take a couple digital pictures of the screen.

Here's the daily build boot screen as appears on IBM Thinkpad T40 with radeon mobility 7500 graphics. The 7500 runs 2D fine but will not run 3D.

Picture of screen, after Ctrl-Alt-Del log out, and starting to log in. Default Ubuntu desktop shown. It should read Ubuntu 2D but does not.

I don't know what log file would show where the default Ubuntu was set.

Just tried booting today's daily build 06 June on an IBM ThinkCentre with Intel i845G graphics. It won't do Natty 3D at all but runs Natty 2D fine.

Booted up, message was:
"Oh, No, something went wrong. Please log out and log in again"

Guess what. The default desktop is listed as
Ubuntu
which of course won't/can't work on the i845G.

Changed it to:
Ubuntu 2D

which is up and running with all today's usual warts of course like Gnome-user-share crash.

So now I've got two machines that won't/can't boot 3D, and for both of them booting 06 June should go right on to boot Unity 2D but don't. Some code is noticing they won't run Ubuntu 3D, that's true, and instead of letting it default to Unity 2D goes in and tries to set it to Ubuntu, namely Unity 3D, which won't work, and not even that the .iso doesn't have to code.

Now I have two test pc's which will run 3D. They boot .iso up in 2D like they should. The two test pc's that won't/can't run 3D are somehow getting set to default desktop
Ubuntu
which won't work.

When I do log in changing the Ubuntu to Ubuntu 2D all four pc's run O.K. for an Alpha.

So according to the logs, unity is correctly reported as unsupported
Unity supported: no

but it doesn't fall back automatically to unity-2d. I'm marking this report as confirmed/high

Thanks, Jean-Baptiste. I checked again with today's 7 June daily build Live.
- Boots to typical Natty purple blotch background instead of 6 June's red screen
- Examples and install icons and cursor instead of just cursor like 6 June
- No panels - no top line, no Unity launchers
- Right click does get launcher where you can fill in what program to launch.
- Ctrl-Alt-t did get a terminal session but I don't know what to do to get the top line and Unity going.
- Ctrl-Alt-Del and logout, log in verifies that the default desktop is "Ubuntu"
- change the desktop to "Ubuntu 2D" up and running like 7 June should.

Same results on both Thinkpad T40 video radeon mobility 7500 and IBM ThinkCentre video i845G neither of which support 3D code. Some software is noticing that and setting the default to Ubuntu instead of leaving the default at Ubuntu 2D.

Also checked with Acer Aspire one netbook which can run Ubuntu 3D. It defaults to Ubuntu 2D which it should because I've read that's the support on the Live platform.

Can you please try to edit /usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop and change:

Then, launch your session which doesn't fallback correctly and attach here ~/.xsession-errors
