Bug Description

In current Natty Beta running with Unity 2D, when clicking on the launcher entry 'applications' and scrolling down a litte bit, you'll notice that the application 'Launcher & Menus' has no icon (as well as the computer-janitor for which I already reported a bug).
I dont't know, if this this the right package to report against.

Thanks.

What build of unity-2d are you using? I am running bs531 on 11.04 beta 1 and both apps have icons on my system.

Hi Aritchie!

According to the information that 'apt-cache show unity-2d' is giving me, I'm using:

unity-2d 3.8.2-0ubuntu1
size: 6546 (bytes download?)
MD5: aac97b060c8718037a33b0df119625da

I have no idea how to find out which build of unity-2d I'm using but I'm running

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty 32-Bit (development branch), fully updated as of now,
with Kernel 2.6.38-8-generic # 42-ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:50 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

inside VirtualBox.

Yeah, mine beta 1 is updated with the latest updates as well. You should be able to go into Software Center - type unity-2d in the Search box and it should display "Unity-2d in the list. Click "More Info" and should tell you the build. That is what I did and it reported it as bzr531. Try this and see what it reports.

I'm sorry, Aritchi.

My Software Center does not display any build information. Please see the attached screenshot, if you do not believe me :)

As I'm using a German localization, I even checked the original strings and corresponding German translations regarding these lables 'Version: …' etc. in software-center (for Natty) as well as in software-store (in Trunk) – just to be sure, there is nothing missing like %s or so. Everything's fine in the translations.

A remark: I'm using this Natty Beta since it was Alpha inside VirtualBox and I've always upgraded it properly. But in the beginning, there was not unity-2d installed (strangely enough) and because my 3D support is not working in the virtual machine, I had to manually install unity-2d by simply entering »sudo apt-get install unity-2d«, which worked fine at that time. After rebooting and choosing »Unity 2D« as my session to log in, I have been using Unity-2D without any strangenesses beside the usual bugs. So a few minutes ago, I wondered, if this manual installation some time ago could have caused my unity-2d to be different from the one that is offered in the Software Center, so I re-installed unity-2d via Software Center and re-logged in to Ubuntu – no difference (unity-2d has the same version as seen in the screenshot, that I took from the current one now, icons still missing and software-center isn't displaying any build information).

And if there's no black magic involved in this issue, I cannot tell why you see some 'build information' and I do not. And I also wonder, why these two icons are missing. Maybe it has something to to with high-res/low-res/vector icons? Or with my VirtualBox guest system screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, true-color? Maybe you want to check out the bug 734476 [1], too.

Thanks for your patience and for investigating this. As soon as my colleagues from the Ubuntu German Translations Team are awake, I'll ask them, if they're missing these icons, too.

I'm experiencing the same problems with current daily build and all updates applied.

When I start the VM and open controll center at first it shows all icons and looks like it is supposed to do. But after a few seconds, without me doing anything, it falls back to the Gnome 2 icons and Gnome 2 appearence partially (at least I think that's what it is), icons for Launcher & Menus, computer janitor etc. get lost and control center only shows a red cross instead of the icon.

I attached two screenshots: 1 when opening control center after starting the VM and 2 after waiting a few seconds.

@Dennis & Adam: the build number information will be available depending on whether you installed unity-2d from the main archive or from the daily builds PPA. Adam, you are using the version from the PPA, whereas Dennis uses the version from the archive, hence the discrepancy.

@Hendrik: you are experiencing a different issue, likely that gnome-settings-daemon, in charge of the GTK theme, crashed. Re-launching it should fix the issue.

It's not only the settings window, it's the whole system that falls back. I reported a new bug, since restart only works around the problem for a few seconds.

Thanks Olivier!

I can confirm that executing 'gnome-settings-daemon' in a terminal not only brings back the icons for 'Launcher & Menus' and 'Computer Janitor' but also switches the theme back to the current nice one. I must have missed the fact that I had the old school graphics.

So we can now refine the problem of missing icons: those are only missing when using the old school fallback theme. Therefore I'll change the title of this bug report now. But I think the package that this bug report should be filed against should change from 'unity-2d' to - I just dont know what package. Maybe '… theme … something' or '… gnome-2 … something'. It appears to me now that those two icons are only missing in that old gnome 2 theme.

Please feel free to correct the project/package name this bug report is filed against.

Thanks for sorting this out.

The icons (computerjanitor and ccsm, respectively) are only present in the Humanity icon theme, which is why they don’t appear in the default fallback theme. That would be a bug in the package for the default theme, but I doubt they would be considered standard enough to be included there.

However unity behaves a bit better: when it cannot find the icon, it falls back to a default "empty document" icon (text-x-preview), instead of displaying nothing.
