I have this bug when removing an external usb hard-drive/media player on 64 bit Lucid Lynx.

First time I have had this issue on Ubuntu, never occurred from Feisty to Koala.

I just noticed that it only happens when I unmount NTFS formatted external disks. Here's a screen capture.

I can confirm this as well using 10.04 for a USB connected external hard drive.

I've this issue with one of my USB HDD. I thought formatting it can resolve it however even gparted can't umount it.
Here is gparted output on umount
Text ended before matching quote was found for ". (The text was 'sh -c 'umount -v "/media/P'TIK"'')
Hope this helps someone understand the problem. I may start a thread on forums as well

I just had this happen two different times when trying to 'safely remove' my Barnes and Noble Nook eReader.

I have not had any problems with my Sansa Fuze media player or my Lexar JumpDrive USB drive.

I plug Kindle DX in my computer, Kindle's desktop icon appears, I right-click it, then click safely remove the unit, then get the error message:

Error detaching: helper exited with exit code 1: Detaching device /dev/sdb
USB device: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb1/1-6)
SYNCHRONIZE CACHE: OK
STOP UNIT: FAILED: No such file or directory

What should I do?

I got the same error.

I own 7 usb drives. on 5 the safely remove the drive works without any problem. on 2 I got tha error. One of those 2 drives are 5 years old and the other is 3 month old.

This problem must belong to some hardware features or custimatuzaion features.

Hope this helps to analyze the problem. I will futher investigate to see any difference between the drives.
