I have the same problem and I am using a fully updated Lucid i386 install the drive in my machine is a Pioneer DVR-112.

The first time after boot you put any media in the drive it is seen and is shown on the desktop and on ejecting the tray goes back in again the dis is detected and some activity is seen but nothing is seen on the desktop and if you are looking in /media the drive goes away.

All was OK when I was running a fully updated Alpha3 install but I am not certain if it ever worked since the Beta1 install or only failed since the latest kernel update.

I will boot into the previous kernel ans see if any behavior alters and report back.

Since the updates of yesterday the behavior has changed in that nothing put in the Pioneer DVR-112 now mounts when booted with either -16 or -17 kernel all that happens is you see a solid activity light as the disk spins up then a brief pause before a flashing activity light and when this stops instead of the disc in the drive being mounted the drive just disappears from Computer and on attempting to eject the disk instead of ejecting it just goes though the spin-up and read cycle when the eject button on the drive is pressed but if you press it a second time after the disk activity ceases it eject OK an the drive re-appears in computer.

In the past I have seen this problem before on another distribution about 2 years ago and I think UDEV was the culprit for the failure then.

I have booted the same hardware into what is normally used (Fully updated 8.04) and the drive performs as expected.

Checking what has been updated since the install of Beta1 in /var/cache/apt/archive/ i can see we have had updates to the following packages which might also have caused this bug

gvfs
mount
nautilus
uuid-runtime
udev --- (reported against)
udisks

The same issue with Pioneer DVR-212D.

Mounting can be forced by pressing "format disk" in the Disk Utility. After an error message the disk is recognized. Appearently the initial reading of disk fails for some reason. No issue with the same drive and system in Karmic and prior versions.

I am not sure if this bug is still under the attention of the
developers. The original issue is solved as far it concerns me. I see no
responses from them anymore.

This is likely fixed upstream now. Martin Pitt (if you read this), can you pull in http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/hotplug/udev.git;a=commit;h=bc913ce47821ed030437ec9b25507b5dd52b59cb to your ppa for them to test?

The patch stopped my system from retracting the CD tray right after ejecting, but upon further testing, I noticed it can still leave the disc mounted after it's been removed. It probably can't mount a new disc after that, same as before this patch, but I didn't check that.

FrenchNux, do you still get automatic closing of the tray in any scenario with this patch? I believe that's the only bug the patch will solve, and the other issues should have separate bug reports.

I have a similar issue in the Lucid port for PowerPC , except in my case I can't load a CD/DVD. When I open the tray, it closes before I can load the CD. lshw identifies the drive as a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105.

which causes the drive to open and immediately close

and

which does nothing

and also
eject -T
which again causes the drive to open and immediately close

This appears to be the same udev bug reported for Fedora:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=453095

A fix was found via editing sysctl.conf to set
ev.cdrom.autoclose = 0

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=453095#c127

I am going to give this a try later this afternoon.

Adding the line
dev.cdrom.autoclose = 0
to /etc/sysctl.conf allowed me to successfully load CDs/DVDs into the drive, but the media does not automount. I have to use the "mount" command in terminal to successfully mount the media.

I have the same problem... I need to press the eject button on my CD drive three times, First when it is closing again... to get it out, when it pulls in, press eject, the tray goes out an then in again, pressing eject one more time here let the tray stay out for me.

Don't know anything about Linux and anything by anything... but It is autoupdated with the latest: "what ubuntu thinks should be updated" (Lucid Lynx [64] on AMD 64).

I have 2 optical drives, a DVD read/write drive and a DVD read only drive, both internal SATA.

The DVD R/W drive works perfectly. I have no mounting problems with either drive.

The DVD ROM drive has the open/close problem. When I eject the drive using it's open/close button or using the 'eject' command the drive ejects, stays open for about 1 second, and then automatically closes again. This only happens if there is a disk already in the drive, if it is empty then it stays open and does not auto close.

The drive is: Samsung DVD drive model: DVD-ROM SH-D163B

udev Version: 151-12 (udev)

Thanks.
