Bug Description

Binary package hint: udev

In the spec for dpkg Triggers https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/dpkg-triggers it's scheduled for Gutsy to use triggers for update-initramfs. This package and others in Gutsy still call /usr/sbin/update-initramfs directly in postinst scripts. Since any changes to an initramfs can potentially break booting, this would be nice to fix, especially for servers where change control is strict.

Colin Watson (cjwatson) wrote :

If 'update-initramfs -u' detects that it's being called from a maintainer script, it will automatically activate the trigger and exit immediately. Thus, this seems like a non-issue; it's already designed for and handled.

I think that I would rather change the update-initramfs call to a trigger call much later when triggers are very common -- right now the only downside is that you get a message on the screen, with a HUGE upside that if triggers aren't being used/working/available/etc. the initramfs is actually updated
