having alot of troubles with update-manager --> lots of crashes and dependencies not met!
this is one of them.
upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 does not work at all with a lenovo R61!

That sounds serious. How did you manage to remove the "initramfs-tools" package? It's a dependency of a lot of packages.
Please give me the output of "dpkg -s initramfs-tools" and try to fix the package status with "sudo apt-get -f install" (please copy&paste its output if that fails).
