I was adding the mail notification locations in the 'Mail Notification Properties' 'Mailbox List' when the Ubuntu One cloud appeared with an ! mark.

Sorry you are having problems with Ubuntu One. It looks like you might have some corrupted metadata. Could you please try the following.
1. Quit the Ubuntu One client by right-clicking the applet and select 'Quit'
2. Open Applications > Accesories > Terminal and run the following to quit the syncdaemon:
u1sdtool -q
3. Open Applications- >Accessories- >Terminal and run:
sudo mv -r ~/.local/ share/ubuntuone ~/.local/ share/ubuntuone _backup
Now start Applications > Internet > Ubuntu One and use as normal. PLease let us know if this improves your issue.
