Just for the correct wording: The user can't change the device name. What he can only do is to set an alias which is then passed next to the actual device name. The alias is also known as the "Bluetooth device friendly name". See https://git.kernel.org/cgit/bluetooth/bluez.git/tree/doc/adapter-api.txt#n120 for details on how to set it over DBus and the BlueZ API.

@Simon

Your technical description makes sense...

But at this stage, Ubuntu on smartphones/phablets/tablets does not allow users to set an alias ("Bluetooth device friendly name") for a bluetooth device (host OR slave), meaning that users are stuck with whatever ACTUAL name the manufacturer has allocated to a particular device.

@Gregory: Sure. I was just trying to get this right from the technical point of view. Its a matter of just being able to set the alias from the settings app nothing else.

Thanks @Simon - your answer makes it clearer to a user like myself what is going on/how this works, and I'm sure one of the Community/Canonical Developers will appreciate your input... I know I did.

This feature would be very useful for my family. We have 3 bq Aquaris E4.5 and sometimes it's not that easy to figure out which device is whose :)

This issue is still present for me, except that the name of the mobile device is not shown at all anymore...
