Ubuntu Phone does not connect to car-bluetooth

With my FORD Focus Car, pairing does not work. The bluetooth system in the car searches for devices and shows "Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition" and then prompts me to connect with a 4-digit pin code, but the Ubuntu phone doesn't react at all and after a while the car system says that it failed to connect.

@ Markus: Same issue here while pairing with workstation.
Aquaris' device list shows workstation as "computer" but the device remains grey and is not clickable.

Probably we could improve the pairing behaviour by editing some configurations files in /etc/bluetooth/..
(on mobile phone and/or workstation)

I remember, that this solved an issue pairing my workstation and a HarmanKardon BT headset.

The car audio issue could only be solved on mobile phone configuration files.

Thank you for your bug report. The bug seems similar to bug #1366061 which should have been fixed in rtm some weeks ago, not sure if the fix is on the image you are using though?

Could you add your ~/.cache/upstart/application-legacy-ubuntu-system-settings.log to the bug after trying to pair the device? Having a bluetoothd debug log would also be useful, would you feel confortable running commands from an adb shell to get those info?

Strage behaviour... I could pair my mobile to the FORD audio system with

* hcitool scan
* bluez-simple-agent hci0 <device-addr>

and both devices report "connected" state.

But I could not activate/use my mobile.

I have the same issue when trying to connect to my bluetooth headset to my BQ E4.5. I have managed to get the headset connected twice; on the first occasion the connection lasted about 30s before repeatedly dropping out and reconnecting for 3 or 4 cycles and then permanently disconnecting. Today the headset connected and then dropped out immediately a call was connected.

This is a SAFETY issue as hands-free phone use whilst driving is impossible.

I have also noticed that quite often when you try turning bluetooth on in the settings menu, it turns itself off again within a couple of seconds.

Same issue with connection with my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
- I have switched on the BT at the Aquaris E 4.5
- I have searched the phone from my computer.
- I found it as "Computer"
- I paired the phone and the 6 digit PIN was displayed on both devices.
- Then I tapped on the phone the button for "the PINs are the same"
- After that I see the Ubuntu Device as paired, but the phone is still busy.
- On the Desktop the buttons are greyed out and I can't do anything.
- After a little while the Desktop announces, that the pairing has failed
- And finally the Desktop BT name disappeared also from the phone.

Now I am again at the beginning.

My conclusion: Almost all works, but finally the pairing has failed.

Bluetooth is a big issue for me, with the following issues I have noticed so far:
1) I can pair my bq Aquaris with my Skoda Octavia (2013), I think it is a Bolero radio BUT the connection is very flakey, connection often drops and then it cannot be restored without a phone reboot. Phone call cannot last more than about 5 minutes before a connection is lost.
2) The bluetooth icon often looks like it is still connected to something but in the settings page it says "Not Discoverable" and there are no components connected.
3) I then cannot turn bluetooth off or on - the toggle indicator just reverts back to where it was unless I reboot the phone.
4) I have connected to a cheap set of bluetooth headphones (PSYC) but after terminating a connection I was unable to reconnect and no. 2 above happens again

Same problem with all Android devices . The devices will recognize and engage but you can not transfer files .
On the phone Aquaris also the BT is not present between the possibility of sharing ( eg . Photos )

OK so my initial optimism with r21 expressed in #15 has been tempered.
I still get a lot of dropped calls.
To activate audio for music or podcasts through the bluetooth I have to connect then toggle the bluetooth off and on again.. I've tried all sorts of other methods but this is the only way.

I am unable to get a stable connection between my BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition phone and my car kit. The phone is recognisedby the car as a device, it is paired and synchronised, but the bluetooth connection is severed approximately 20 seconds after synching. At the same time the BQ Phone starts searching for/connecting to new devices.

The BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition runs on Ubuntu 14.10 (r21) and my car is a Volvo V50. Connections to the car kit work well with Android, Windows and Apple phones.

Confirm: Mitsubishi Lancer with Rockford Fosgate audio car system.
Car system recognise the phone and pairing goes well. Also, connection between car system and phone estabilishes quite fast as I come aboard, but if I make a call I have the "bluetooth speaker icon" active and phone mute, so as car system continuing to play radio.
In other words... it doesn't work.
The car system worked well with iPhone and other smartphones.

Cannot connect my BQ Aquaris E5 to the car unit Clarion FZ502 (with updated firmware 1.57) .
The phone can see the car unit, but when trying to pair no pin nr pops up for confirmation and connection only last 1-4 sek. After than the phone search for new units again.
Tried to connect via hcitool + bluez-simple-agent hci0 <device-addr>, but this results in a "Page timeout"

The phone connects with my Audi carkit after a few tries. The connection drops again after 30-60 sec.

Kevin, I found the time allowed to enter the code on the `phone was very short. It really is worth re-trying as quickly as possible. Once established you will probably find it does`t always connect automatically but will connect when car and `phone "connect" buttons are selected..

@Andriopoulos: Did you reboot after you executed the steps mentioned on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlan/ubuntu-system-settings#Bluetooth-1 ? Those things will only be effective when you reboot so the relevant services get restarted (you could restart them manually but to keep the system in a sane state it's better to reboot). The log you attached doesn't has any bluetooth debug messages in it.

indeed i didn't reboot, sorry for that, i attached a new log on which i rebooted, i turned on bluetooth and waited a bit so it can try to connect to the old pairing, then i debonded the devices initiated a new pairing and tried to make some calls, at the time of the calls the phone was saying that it was paired but the car's bluetooth icon wasn't lit and calls were made by using the phones speaker.

* Did you power off Bluetooth at some point through the UI?
* You say "calls" but I only see one call being made in that log file. Can you please describe the exact steps you performed after you powered on your phone?
* What is the exact model of the Car you're using?

From the log you attached it looks like the HCI controller signals us that the Bluetooth device wents down so bluez is just reacting on incoming events and brings everything else also down:

i made two calls, one didn't complete and had a tone that usually happens when some carrier problem occurs, i was also curious why its missing from the log because i tried to hide the number, car is a ford fiesta 2010 model, i think that i turned of BT and switched it back on because the car wasn't listed for pairing.

- Pressed 'Make a connetion' on the phone, but it failed again.

does it mean you can connect to the car but got disconnected sometime? in which case that would be a different issue and should have a separate bug, that one is about car no pairing at all, not about dropping calls

Would be interesting to know how bluetooth differs between car manufacturers. My BmW has no problem linking to the `phone once first establisehd but it cannot download address data. Have contacted tech dept at bq who claim to be working on the connection problem but have yet to see any progress.

The strange thing is that both the Samsung GS4 and the GS5 I owned before
always connected seamlessly. My BQ Aquaris is a different story, though. I
had once suggested that Canonical uses reverse engineering to solve this
issue, but I never received any feedback :(

@Mark: How should reverse engineering help here? Its simply an interoperability issue and we're using completely different software than Android does. However the interface to the BT chip is standardized so no need to reverse anything here. We need to find out where exactly this bug is and what we can do for it. Before we don't know that we can't start any coding.

@Mark: That is good to hear. My suspection now is that it's either a problem with the BT chipset firmware or something in in-kernel bluetooth management layer as the Meizu has a newer kernel than the BQ device (Meizu: 3.10, BQ: 3.4).

I can confirm this issue in a Ford Fiesta. After the device detection and introducing the pin for connection nothing happens, the connection is not established. Can someone please update the debugging instructions on: (a) best way to use the command line in the phone (installing terminal? developer mode on?), it might be useful for some users (b) how to revert the verbose logging and leave the phone as it was before?

* Does the connection not happen directly after you paired the device successfully?
* Please check with /usr/bin/bluez-list-devices if you car is paired. Optimal would be if you can attach the output here.

1) Turn bluetooth on in the phone and click Ford Audio in the list of devices
2) The car shows a pin that you enter in the phone
3) The phone should list Ford Audio always as Connected. However, what is seen if that Ford Audio sometimes appear in the "Connect a device:" section as connected, other times in "Connect automatically when detected" section as disconnected. I could not understand the behavior.
4) Normally, after doing 1 and 2 in every other phone the blue indicator is always on

When I try to connect again the phone to the car, I always have to enter a new pin.

Just add-apt-repository doesn't work as the priority of a silo is below the regular archive so those things aren't pulled in.

At best you use the citrain command line tool for this. However if you're installing a silo you will put your device into unsupported state and have to reflash to avoid any problems on OTA upgrade. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/citrain/LandingProcess#Command-Line_Tool for how to install the citrain tool.

Then it is simple as this:

$ citrain device-upgrade 43 <your device pin>

Wait a bit and the device will go through a reboot.

My Meizu with OTA 6 seems to pair with my car (Renault, with built-in TomTom, phone sees the car as My_Radiosat, car see the phone as "MX4 Ubuntu Edit" truncated from Edition), however it does not connect most of the time.

I managed to get it to connect a few times (audio), but sound does not come from the car speakers but from the phone. Also phone functions from the car don't work. Selecting the phone to dial out cause a bluetooth reconnect that fail after a while.

(these functions worked with android phones of course).

In an other case, my Ubuntu Touch does not display the PIN dialog, while connecting to a BT keyboard...
So i guess, Ubuntu Touch devices miss essential bluetooth features, which are functional and present on Ubuntu Desktop systems.

@Nephilim1973: No, we can't "learn" anything here from Android. We have a completely different bluetooth stack which you can't compare with the Android one. Config files in /etc/bluetooth/*.conf don't help. Those problems are at other layers.

* different BT chip
* different UI handlers
* newer kernel with updated Bluetooth stack

We're currently working quite hard to update the bluetooth stack on Touch (which dates back to 2012) to a newer, more stable and reliable one. Can't give any timeline yet but it will happen soon.

1 - My two computers (Ubuntu 14.04 and Mac OS X 10.10.5) connect to my BQ 4.5 for 2 seconds and drop the connection. Ubuntu to Ubuntu it's a joke ?
2 -With my first audio headset, at the end of several minutes of listening or if I receive a phone call, the sound cuts itself and I have to reboot the phone
3- With the second audio headset, the sound is of very bad quality, jerky.

I used these devices bluetooh with an iPhone 5 with no problem at all and I used even audio files to make my tests.

I cannot connect to the unit in my Hyundai i40, and switching to the latest rc-proposed with bluez5 hasn't changed anything.

Symptoms:
(1) When car unit is asked to search for devices, the phone is not seen at all. My other bluetooth devices get picked up by this search. I have checked, and the Ubuntu phone should be advertising
(2) Putting my car into listening mode, my phone can see it as "i40". If I try to connect, I get the PIN input screen on my phone but nothing happens after I input my PIN. The phone says the i40 is "disconnected" and the car doesn't register anything at all.

I have the same problem in my Scania. Pairing "works". Phone sees the BT of a radio correctly then I'm starting pairing, I give the code, radio gives me a message that pairing was correct and my Aquaris 4.5 is on the list of known trusted devices but never connects to the phone. After few seconds I get a message that the connection with the phone failed.
From the phone side the problem looks this way: my bq shows me that it is connected to the radio. It is always connected even if I turn the radio off or click the "disconnect" button. Funny thing is that though the phone is telling me that it is connected with the radio of the car (I think it shows it as a headset) when I'm making a phone call the phone isn't trying to send and receive the voice via bluetooth. I can talk through the phone though it shows it is connected with the radio/headset.

Confirmed also to be an issue with:

1. Select Bluetooth device manager in car console
2. Car console states name of carkit, switches to discoverable mode
3. Turn on BT in phone and wait
4. Carkit appears in phone, press connect
5. Phone shows "Connected", "Excellent" reception, you can check "Connect automatically"

But no pairing appears on neither devices. The carkit has no option to discover devices at all, just passive waiting. Also, phone shows carkit as headphone, which is basically OK, but the carkit can also act als multimedia player. SO both profiles should be announced, maybe that's the problem?

All of them connect to the car bluetooth without issue, except Ubuntu. It's been an issue for a year now.

Can we have a big push to sort this please?

In the car i have a radio with bluetooth clarion CZ301E.
Before OTA 9 sound worked fine.
After OTA 9 i cant hear Music through music app or from calls.

First time in bluetooth settings says that the signal status is none. (Attached image).
Sometimes disconnecting and connecting i can reproduce Audio, after that bluetooth settings says that the signal is OK.

Same problem Aquaris E4.5 from OTA 8 or 8,5 with classic PARROT systems

My two parrots systems (two differents cars) are detected & I can lauch the pairing procedure
The parrot start pairing and waiting for 4 digit password from E4,5.

Nothing more, aquaris is in pairing procedure, don't tell about password, after a moment, the parrot cancel the pairing.

The two Parrot are in the memory of E4,5 and can't be forgot (inactive button)

I updated my Auquaris E.4.5 with OTA-10 today and tested with my Alpine Car Audio.

After a little bit of a struggle (one crash of the bluetooth on the phone and a phone reboot) it connects now and shows the phone symbols (signal strength and battery) on the display of the car audio.

It also does ring when called and I can pick the phone up pressing the button on the car audio, but neither the speaker nor the microphone of the the Alpine seem to work and the speaker and microphone of the phone seems to be switched off.

My Aquarius E5 will connect via Bluetooth to my VW system, but fails to make calls.
This problem was not there prior to OTA 8.5. I'd had hoped that this problem would have been resolved by OTA-10.

The problem has got worse for my handset.
It will connect fine, but when making call, the Bluetooth will be discount and connection become difficult if the phone does not get rebooted.

The problem I think for me, lays with the phone's ability to use the car's system as a loud speaker. The call does connect but I cannot hear the recipient, nor can they hear me.

I believe this most likely is a race, when two paired devices try to reestablish the connection at the same time:

When entering the car, but the HMI and the phone indicate they try connecting and it usually fails.
Still after some minutes it happens, that only one side tries to initiate the connection (didn't check who actually does, car or phone) and then the connection usually gets established.

Just a little curious how this bug is now regarded as incomplete and no longer assigned to anyone? What kind of information is needed to make it complete?

I can confirm this on my Bq Aquaris 4.5 (rc-proposed) and Volvo My Car system, it connects (however not automatically) but no audio from microphone or speakers.

From my point of view, bluetooth is currently the biggest achilles heel of the platform as evidenced by numerous bug reports. I am willing to help out any way I can to test fixes to this. I have also tried to contact the Canonical developers authoring much of the bluetooth code in Ubuntu Touch, but not received any reply. So much is progressing at a high speed in Ubuntu Touch, but bluetooth appears to fall between chairs somehow...

Did the update to OTA12 on a Meizu MX4 and trying to connect to an Audi bluetooth system:

Small step forwards...

Works:
- Car bluetooth is detected
- The car bluetooth is shown (not just unknown...)
- If I press 'connect', I'm asked for the pincode
- If I enter the correct pincode, ubuntu says it's connected

Doesn't work:
- Altough ubuntu says it's connected, the car doesn't agree: no phone
  connected...
- If I place a call (using the phone), the bluethoot indicator icon turns
  white, but the sound go's through the phone speaker. Nothing happens on
  the car display
- If the phone is restarted, it can't connect again with the car system
- If I remove all the bluetooth devices on the car system, I can
  reconnect using the pin. But strangely, the signal strength is 'none'?
  Only removing the connection on both devices, gives me back 'strong'
  as signal strength...

I also have a Peugeot. For that car everything works excellent (even after removing the connections and connecting again):
- Calling trough bluetooth
- Syncing contacts
- Listening to music trough bluetooth

If new debug info/logs are useful, please let me know...

Today I tried with OTA12. Actually nothing changed BUT!!! I see the problem somewhere else! I tried to pair my phone with a few car audio systems. What You will see in the photos that i'm gonna attach below seems not to be a problem with the bluetooth itself but with the system. My bq4.5 displays all devices i tried to pair! Thats why i was today unable to connect: I used to connect my phone to "BT Scania" and "Scania BT". They are both visible on the list and I can't get rid of them! That seems to be a problem, cause i deleted the phone from the radio but can't forget the radios in the phone. That's why pairing is impossible. As You see in the screenshots, i'm unable to forget the device actually both of them whether one of them is near or not. This way i'm unable to pair, connect etc.

I can pair my Meizu Mx4 ubuntu edition (OTA-13) with my handfree car system (Mazda 6). It connects and the device pairs, than it starts to connect and disconnect phone and audio and I cannot make any phone calls. It is also impossible to import contacts. I tried in normal mode and in developer mode. Nothing helps. The problems got worse from OTA-9 on until now.
With other devices like headset or bluetoth speaker bluetooth works well.
Help would be greatley appreciated!

My car use the protocol Hands-Free (HFP) 1.0 (or higher).

Wikipedia says: Currently in version 1.7, this is commonly used to allow car hands-free kits to communicate with mobile phones in the car. It commonly uses Synchronous Connection Oriented link (SCO) to carry a monaural audio channel with continuously variable slope delta modulation or pulse-code modulation, and with logarithmic a-law or μ-law quantization. Version 1.6 adds optional support for wide band speech with the mSBC codec, a 16 kHz monaural configuration of the SBC codec mandated by the A2DP profile. Version 1.7 adds indicator support to report such things as headset battery level.

My car (Renault, from April 2015, with built-in TomTom) does detect my BQ Aquaris E5 Ubuntu ed (OTA-12) but does not pair or connect.
The phone's bluetooth works well with other bluetooth devices.

On my Renault Laguna (2010) with TomTom Carminat I managed to pair, but connect doesn't seem to work.

I ssh'ed into the phone (Arale) while connecting and saw that it actually does connect, but is disconnected after 2 seconds. This seems to confuse the TomTom shows it is trying to connect while in reality it was connected until the connection broke.

I didn't see any reason why it disconnects in log etc. But maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

I would say it's about time we get this fixed. It seems to be some sort of timing issue. I'd be happy to collect logs, just let me know how.

Following my comment "2015-08-25: #65"

Using OTA13 -> I can still confirm this issue in a Ford Fiesta. After the device detection and introducing the pin for connection, message in the car says the phone was paired successfully and in the phone seems connected for a while, however, the blue led indicator in the car does not show up (confirming that the device would be ready to establish calls) and bluetooth is not usable at all.

- First, the phone sayd it was connected to the bluetooth system but the car didn't agree.

Again no sucess to connect the phone to the car.

After typing the 4-digit pin code into the Aquaris E5,
the phone displays, it is connected to the car's PCM (Porsche Communication Management).
The car displays, that there "is still a confirmation by the phone missing".
But no confirmation dialog is promting on the phone.
After that the displayed connection with the car disappers from the phone.

After so many OTAs this is quite disappointing...

After the OTA13 stable update I'm now able to pair my phone with the in car bluetooth system for the first time. However the pairing process was a bit of a hassle until it worked. I was not able to detect why pairing suddenly worked after 5 unsuccessful tries. Maybe a timing issue, because I have to enter a 16 digit code and not a 4 digit code.

After pairing I can access contacts, start calls etc. The phone also reconnects perfectly after entering the car again. Everything seems to work...

BUT the bluetooth audio is not routed to my car speakers/microphone. I can browse my contacts, start a call and answer calls, but I can't hear anyting and my opposite can't hear me.

For me OTA13 was an improvement (pairing now works), but I still can't make phone calls in the car.

My Ubuntu Phone would be perfect, if hands-free speaking would work. Please keep up the good work and release a fix as soon as possible!

With OTA13 it is still not working together with my Garmin Navigon navigation system.
I can pair my phone and the navigation system. The navigation system can also download the addressbook and initiate calls, but during a call no audio is routed between the phone and the navigation system.

Le système Bluetooth recherche et affiche "Aquaris E5.HD" puis me demande de se connecter avec un code PIN à 4 chiffres, mais le téléphone Ubuntu ne réagit pas du tout et après un certain temps le système de voiture dit qu'il n'a pas réussi à se connecter.

With my car FORD kuga, pairing does not work. The Bluetooth system searches and displays "Aquaris E5. HD" and asks me to log in with a PIN 4-digit, but the Ubuntu phone does not react at all and after a while the car system says it does has failed to connect.

The problem is not so much the `phone but the car. I went to BMW yesterday because mine did connect OK initially but now won`t do it. They were able to get "Connected" on the screen but there was no signal. They then went into the database of the car and found BQ were not on the list. I have an Apple 3 which connects instantly. BQ need to issue the software to car manufacturers otherwise a lot of fed up people will dump the `phone.

There are so many mobile phones coming and leaving the market.
A car manufactor cannot know and maintain them all.

My car from 2011 worked fine with a new Windows Phone from 2014.
I have never heard of a phone database update for my or other cars.

Here it is more a question of ensuring the bluetouth standard behaviour of our Ubuntu Phones.

I flashed on Mako already months ago and experienced issues with my Alpine car stereo. Now flashed again latest release and connected to my BMW F31 multimedia system. All seemed fine after pairing but then the multimedia launched a call showing "******" as the destination number. Radio obviously stopped playing but no message on the phone. I removed the device and paired again but also then, again launched the call in the car with the ******* as a destination. If somebody can instruct me how to run a log file, just let me know.

Finally IT WORKS! But from the beginning:

After the OTA 14 Update I tried again to connect to my in car bluetooth system and make calls. Connecting (still) worked. Next I tried to make a call and again no sound from the speakers. After random changes on both ends (phone and in car system, of course with no systematic tracking), I tried again to call somebody and now speakers/mic worked perfectly. I left my car, entered again, phone reconnected and now again no sound!?! Wtf? But I was hooked, if it worked one time, it has to be possible to make it work again ...

It took me some time to track down the necessary conditions for a stable and working bluetooth connection:

1. In the phones bluetooth settings the auto connect button for the connection to the in car bluetooth system has to be disabled. If this is not disabled, the car and the phone try to establish the connection at the same time and things get messed up, up to the point where both systems eventually freeze.

2. The car system can only establish the bluetooth connection, if the screen of the phone is unlocked.

That's all. If you pay attention to these 2 points, really everything works perfectly (for Volkswagen systems)! Even streaming media via bluetooth works!

I'm really excited, thank you very much for your work! I use my phone for business and desperately needed a working hands free system in my car. Unlocking my screen after entering the car is no big deal to me. Switching back to android is now definitely off the table. Thank you again and keep up the great work! I really love the usability and GUI of my ubuntu phone!

Update point 2:

It seems to be necessary not only to unlock the screen but also to go to the phones bluetooth settings. But then don't do anything on the phone, just initiate the connection from the car system and watch the magic. Sometimes I need 2 or 3 tries to establish a connection, but once the connection is successfully established everything works and is stable.

The above posted method should work for most VAG systems e. g. VW, Audi, Skoda and maybe even Porsche.

I have an Audi but with a UHV.
With my car-kit, you are right that the pairing/connecting works better when the auto-connect option is disabled:
- Once paired, the connection happens automatically
- The phone says it's connected
- The car says there is no phone connected

Nothing else happens...

Update/Correction #171 & #172

In the meantime I drove 1300 km. I think I now fully understand what is and was going on.

After connecting like in #171 & 172 described, I had 4 phone calls on a 600 km trip. 2 times bluez crashed (had to reboot phone) and I wasn't able to update the phonebook in the car system.

So I enabled ‘autoconnect’ in the bluetooth settings on the phone and tried to connect again from the car system. Tatataaa ... on my way back no crashes during phone calls and updating the phonebook now always worked.

What happened? It turned out that I myself messed up the bluetooth connecting process with my impatience. As soon as the car system showed the bluetooth sign and my mobile service provider, I started playing around on both ends (car system & phone). But at this point the connecting process was not completely finished and I fooling around at the same time finally caused crashes on both systems.

I just have to wait like another 10-20 s and everything works perfectly. In my case the connection process is finished when the media player sign shows up in the cars display.

Everything works now as intended, if ‘autoconnect’ is enabled and the car starts the connecting process. Turn on phones bluetooth, get in the car, wait until the car establishes the connection COMPLETELY and enjoy! Nothing else has to be done.

I had the opportunity to test with a brand new Golf today. Pairing worked on the second try. After initial pairing automatically reconnecting worked like a charm. I made one 15 min. phone call and could not detect any problems.

Update with OTA 15:

Again no sucess to connect the phone with the car.
I tried the upper advices from "Monsterwade" (Thank you :-):
- auto connect disabled
- unlocked screen and stay on the bluetooth screen
or:
- auto connect enabled and much of waiting

My car system shows allways this dialog:
"A confirmation by the phone is still missing".
But no confirmation dialog is promting on the phone.
After a while the displayed connection with the car disappers from the phone.

I am very sorry about that, after so many OTAs.

Watching the connect process, the phone try to pair my car as a headset.

My car use the protocol Hands-Free (HFP) 1.0 (or higher).

I believe there is no protocol HFP integrated.
This could be the reason of connect error with cars.
