Bug Description

Binary package hint: banshee

Under 10.10 I am able to go into Banshee preferences and set the Import CD format as MP3. However, this option is not available within Natty.

Since I need to import my (and my wife's) cd's into a format which is readable on the various computers and devices we use, MP3 is a requirement. It would be the same for a lot of new converts...

There is probably a package to be installed, but if MP3's can play "out of the box", then why can't they be imported as well?
At the very least a pop-up message advising what needs to be installed would be helpful.

I am not sure about if this it's a real issue or not because if you go to Preferences->Source Specific->Source->Audio Cds you are able to choose which format you want use to import automatically, even Ogg - Wav and MP3.

Changed in banshee (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low

On my home computer (I am at work so I can't check now), it has the Ogg, FLAC, and Wav options, but _no_ MP3 option. This is my point.

Obviously I am missing a package or something which you have installed to enable MP3. Since my desktop was a standard install with the "non-free software" enabled, but no extra stuff (like restricted-extras), I don't have the option for MP3 which you do.

I can take a screen shot tonight to show you if you like?

It is a real issue because if people have a requirement to use MP3, which is basically the standard for the average user, and find they can't use it, then they will find another non-banshee (and maybe even non-ubuntu) solution.

Ok, see the attachment. There is no MP3 option in the list.

Stephen, do you have gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 package installed in your system?

Ok I found it, you should have gstreamer0.10-lame, that did the trick. (sorry for the delayed answer)

That's done the trick, thank you :)

Is there a reason why this isn't installed by default when you tick the "Install non-free software" checkbox in the installer?
It seems like a major omission from the list, if MP3 is supported for everything else.

If this isn't the place to ask this sort of question, where should ask instead?

affects: banshee (Ubuntu) → ubuntu-restricted-extras (Ubuntu)
