Seriously, it was like a fire tornado on planet Hellmire. I'm lucky I didn't get burned.

One strange thing I see in Mainlog.txt is that the canonical-kernel-team PPA was disabled and then enabled. This could be because I wanted to use my local mirror of the archive but that's not clear to me.

Yeah, if you said "Yes" to the prompt "While scanning your repository information no mirror entry for the upgrade was found...", then it has the effect of running with --allow-third-party. So it is expected that this would keep the kernel PPA enabled.

Looking at the dialog again it says "Do you want to rewrite your 'sources.list' file anyway?" not "Do you want to rewrite every sources file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ file anyway?". So I think it is surprising that this had the effect of running with --allow-third-party.
