Same thing just happened to me... Got an update to 6.2.0-25-generic, rebooted and was welcomed by a black screen.

I was able to boot by plugging in to my AMD iGPU and noticed that the Nvidia driver was not loaded, and the package nvidia-dkms-535 was not installed. I installed it and rebooted and now it is working. Third time in a month now that a routine upgrade makes my system crash on boot :-/

Probably related:

Possibly related to the fact that there are no linux-modules-nvidia-535-6.2.0-25-generic or linux-objects-nvidia-535-6.2.0-25-generic packages in the repositories?

Hello Andrew,

I personally experienced two different root causes for black screens during kernel updates:

1) apt is holding back linux-modules-nvidia-*-generic.
This happened to me at least three times.
This seems to be what happened to Alexander Brissman because Alexander could install the missing packages.

2) linux-modules-nvidia-535-6.2.0-25-generic does not exist.
This happened to me with the combination of linux-generic 6.2.0-25 and nvidia-driver-535.
See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules/+bug/2027914.

I also experienced a black screen during the update from nvidia-driver-525 to nvidia-driver-535.
This was without a kernel update.
See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-535/+bug/2025640.
