Bug Description

"Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If you want to investigate this yourself the log files in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade. Specifically, look at 'main.log' and 'apt.log'."

I did uncheck my two ppa in my upgrade sources but still get the above error message.

Could you please try re-installing the ubuntu-desktop package via the command line and then try the upgrade again? Thanks!

Dear Brian,

Two questions. What do you mean by "the ubuntu-desktop package"? Do you
mean the iso I downloaded for Ubuntu 18.04? And, if so, in what format?
Iso?

Second, where might I get directions on just how to install the package
from the command line. By command line I take it you mean a terminal
where I might use sudo as the first word.

Hopfully,

George Rodier

Brian, by ubuntu-desktop package, do you mean

ubuntu-release-upgrader-core ?

And, if so, where to I find that?

Please run the following in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

Hi Brian,

Did so:

bash: /etc/profile.d/vte.sh: No such file or directory
george@Leysin:~$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
[sudo] password for george:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
ubuntu-desktop is already the newest version (1.417.5).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
george@Leysin:~$ ^C
george@Leysin:~$

What I do find strange is that last evening I upgraded an older (2005)
PC which had xubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 with no real difficulty. Yes, it
never did stop searching for files to remove (in preparation for Clean
UP), so this morning I just turned it off and rebooted. Then I ran the
three apt commands, update, upgrade, and autoremove. That PC now runs
xubuntu 20.04 just fine.

It is not enough to uncheck the PPAs in your upgrade sources as that leaves the packages installed on your system. The libsane packages from the SANE ppa are causing your failure to upgrade. You'll want to re-enable the sources and then use the package ppa-purge to restore the official Ubuntu package versions and disable the PPAs. After that the upgrade should be calculatable.
