main.log gives this error:

however, there is no hint in the log files what that might be. I have a few PPAs but none of them are flagged up in the log files. Neither apt.log nor mail.log.

do-release-upgrade still doesn't work.
Workaround (the Debian way):
sed -i 's/bionic/focal/g' /etc/apt/ sources. list
apt update
apt -y dist-upgrade
grub-install
... which works perfectly.
