My distributor upgrader just informed me that is unable to install Ubuntu desktop.

It looks to me like you do not have the 'ubuntu-desktop' package installed. Please install it and try the upgrade again. In the event that I'm wrong please upload your '/var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log' to this bug report. Thanks!
