Bug Description

Originally I was upgrading from 16.04 and switched to 17.10 as an "interediate step". Both presumingly fail for the same reason. However I only have the log from 17.10 available and post this here.

do-release-upgrade -d

--- log ends here ---

Hope someone can help and fix it for others as well maybe.

Looks like Docker-CE might be causing trouble - not sure. I will try again and report back later. Here's what made me suspicious:

sudo apt update

N: Skipping acquire of configured file 'stable/binary-i386/Packages' as repository 'https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu artful InRelease' doesn't support architecture 'i386'

C'ya later with hopefully stable upgraded system… :)

Hmm… nope, removed docker-ce and still no luck. Nice try though…

Ok, got the upgrade running (same machine as i am writing this message on now). Apparently some "unity" packages sneaked into the system. As I don't need those, I removed them and everything seems to be fine now. However I still don't know what packages exactly are causing this problem. This would be very helpful for users to know. Isn't there a better way to show what actually is causing the problem?

Hmm… upgrade now went quite smooth. I could not figure out however, what packages caused the issue here and I haven't found a reference on what to do actually.

I assume, the main issue is the LXQt 0.10.x installation (the only one available for 16.04). During the upgrade, the previous LXQt installation will be completely removed anyway. If you are affected by this issue, the best advice I can give is: "Logout from the active 16.04/17.10 session and switch to a Terminal (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F2). Then remove all lxqt-* packages and upgrade via `sudo do-release-upgrade` from terminal. Alternatively you can install the good old LXDE session before doing the upgrade!

Cheers,
Nils

I tested an upgrade from a fresh and stock install of Lubuntu 16.04 to Lubuntu 18.04 today and the upgrade was successfully calcluated (while yours was not). I also tried installed vlc and some gnome packages you had installed and could not recreate the failure.

I suspect your failure had to do with the xorg packages you had installed from the oibaf PPA. PPA packages regularly cause issues when upgrading from one release to another.

Upgraded two more instances (a quite old 32-bit Lenovo Thinkpad and one 64-bit desktop) from Lubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 - both without any PPA's installed. Didn't experience any problem at all. My own setup is a little customized to my needs. Most of the previously installed PPA's have been moved to isolated containers (e.g. snap) - others are still required and I cannot move them (yet). However I think it is save to close the issue and focus on more important stuff to further improve the distro. :)
