Bug Description

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.

I disabled all repos except canonical.

Originally I tried to upgrade from Lubuntu 16.04 (upgraded to 17.10 after this didn't work -> same behaviour on both).

So tonight I did $ apt update, and it said there were 3000 some updates, so I did $ apt upgrade and now it is installing bionic. So now this bug no longer affects me. I did try a $ do-release-upgrade recently before this, and it claimed the upgrade couldn't be computed as usual.

It was a bit painful cleaning up the mess in Ubuntu 18.04. I couldn't resolve the unmet dependencies issues after apt removed about half the packages on my install. I ended up reinstalling without formatting, and adding the packages I wanted afterwards.

FYI: Situation did not change for me. Currently running 17.10 as an intermediate step. (Anyway I like the new LXQt experience on Lubuntu. :) )

From what I'm understanding here, the OP, Rob, resolved his issue, which centered around Ubuntu Desktop, so for all intents and purposes, this bug should be considered invalid, given those particular requirements.

The other affected party, Nils, seems to be dealing with Lubuntu. I cannot reproduce this issue. Using a fresh VM, for both Artful and Xenial, I installed and let it upgrade like normal. Then I upgraded¹. No problems.

That said, for Lubuntu, I can only conclude that something about your system is inconsistent with a standard system. One thing to note here is that at no point has LXQt been included as part of an official Lubuntu release. That could potentially lead to the issues you're facing. Perhaps we could investigate further, but not without additional information. I would suggest filing a new bug, again with `ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core`. Hopefully it's not too late that we can't get any useful information from it.

¹ Until the first point release, LTS→LTS is not supported through ubuntu-release-upgrader, but requires using `do-release-upgrade -d`.

Walter, thanks for the reply! The issue is still present for my system, built upon on a stable, yet customized version of Lubuntu 16.04.

Not sure I have done that before I stumbled about this issue here. Will definitely repeat this step just in case!

Further I dug a bit into the logs and actually found something that might point to the problem here:

--- log ends here ---

After filing the bug, I am going to retry the update in 'server' mode or shouldn't I?

Ok, got the upgrade running (same machine as i am writing this message on now). Apparently some "unity" packages sneaked into the system. As I don't need those, I removed them and everything seems to be fine now. However I still don't know what packages exactly are causing this problem. This would be very helpful for users to know. Isn't there a better way to show what actually is causing the problem?

It may be of interest to note that I also was using Unity on Ubuntu 17.10.
