Message "unable to install xubuntu-desktop" when upgrading from pangolin to trusty tahr

Bug Description

I am upgrading from precise pangolin to trusty tahr in the update manager and get the aforementioned message. I have tried upgrading before and got the same message. The result was that after upgrading the computer wouldn't move from the splash window.
