Not sure if some 3rd paty software is the cause, I don't think I have any 3rd party software. I actually want Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, but it has asked me to upgrade from 14.04 LTD to 15.10

Reviewing the files from your upgrade attempt you seem to have enabled the xorg-edgers-ppa. This will prevent the upgrade as that PPA contains different versions of packages essential to Ubuntu.
