sudo do-release-upgrade and do-release-upgrade -d are similar, however, the -d is for the latest dev version. April is right around the corner for the "official" release of 16.04 LTS. Stick to what you are using and you may find flaws that will take away from the Ubuntu experience. Stick with a supported releases as to not to wind up with a broken HDD.
