Procedure to upgrade to 14.04 from 13.10 until it fails is
Step 1. Start "Software Updater"
After it has run a dialog box comes up and says:
"The software on this computer is up to date.
However, Ubuntu 14.04 is now available (you have 13.10)
Step 2. Click on the "Upgrade..." button next to the "OK" button.
Next I get the normal "Authenticate" dialog box and put is my password
then click on the "Authenticate" button.
Step 3. The Release Note dialog box comes up and I click on the "Upgrade" button
Step 4. "do-release-upgrade" tool starts
Step 5. then the "Distribution Upgrade" starts then stops with another dialog box saying:
             "Third party sources disabled
Some third party entries in your sources.list were disabled. You can re-enable them after
the upgrade with the 'software-properties' tool or your package manager."
Step 6. Click on "Close" button to continue the process.
              Files are Fetched
Once all the files are Fetched something goes wrong
Step 7. A new dialog box comes up and it reads:
             "Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.
              This can be caused by:
              * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
              * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
              * Unoffical software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug
             ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal."
Step 8. "Close" button on dialog is clicked to end procedure.
               Restore Original State of System

My Question is "What is the procedure/s for eliminating the causes of this problem?"

Reviewing the files from your upgrade attempt you seem to have enabled a PPA that provides Xorg packages. This will prevent the upgrade as that PPA contains different versions of packages essential to Ubuntu. The page, https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa, contains details on to how to revert to the official Xorg packages for the xorg-edgers PPA. Instructions for reverting to official Xorg packages should be similar for the PPA that you have enabled.

Changed in ubuntu-release-upgrader (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid
tags: added: ppa xorg-edgers-ppa

Problem resolved by removing the Broken package then redoing the
installation.
Question: Is there a better way of alerting a user to Broken packages in
the installation process than hours searching the internet to find a
solution? Which I did.
