This is because of packages you've installed from the xorg-edgers PPA. The web page for their PPA contains details regarding how to uninstall their versions of packages and install Ubuntu's. After you've installed Ubuntu's version of the packages, you'll be able to complete the upgrade.

Additionally, there is no need to run update-manager as sudo, it will escalate privileges as needed.

Getting segmentation fault without xorg-edgers

PPAs currently installed are:
directhex-monoxide
keks9n-monodevelop
steam private ppa
tuxpoldo-btsync

3rd part repos include
steam
google-chrome stable

This may have something to do with using an nVidia or AMD graphics driver.

Try this from the command line:
sudo do-release-upgrade -d

That's working for me.
