Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop
Fundamentally, this problem belongs to Gnome, but cause Ubuntu and Gnome are the same thing, I've decided to post here.
DVD copying is too sensitive to errors, most errors which overcome by other programs (like KDE's and cp) do not do well with gnome; it gives out an i/o error.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version.
