arrow keys on keyboard don't work in "Add Applications" program

I've got Ubuntu 5.10 running on a Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop.

1) I opened the "Applications" menu and selected "Add Applications".
2) I clicked on an application in the left pane, which became highlighted in
dark brown.
3) I tapped the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard, expecting the
highlighted box to move from application to application. It didn't.
4) Furthermore, hitting the spacebar to select or deselect an item does not work.
