Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

Hello,
after my upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 the Gnome desktopn environment doesn't load fully for users others the one which I used ti perform the upgrade.
When logging as other useres (existing ones and new ones) the Gnome desktop just won't start. Sometimes shows a white screen or only wallpaper and empty toolbars/panels.

After installing Hardy Heron I sometimes doesn't get my nice desktop loaded, only the bars and mouse pointer.
My desktop is just that light brown background colour and black if I try to enable the visual desktop effects.

Hardware:
Desktop computer
Asus Motherboard
Intel dual core 3.4 Ghz
nvidia geforce 6 using the glx-driver

What bothers me is that it works sometimes and then doesn't work other times.

Thanks

I experience s similar behavior. Often when I login directly after booting the PC the desktop doesn't load (the backrgound image is shown, but no icons or context menu). After restarting X and trying again everything is fine. Seldom the gnome panel doesn't load, either.

This comes up from time to time, but I was not able to reproduce this right now. Looks like some kind of race condition to me. The next time it happens I'll look into my .xsession-errors and post the result here.

The problem with the panel doesn't happen anymore, but still I have sometimes missing icons and recently even the wallpaper did not show up. I looked in .xsession-errors for problems with Nautilus but could not find anything suspicious. Not sure how I can investigate this.

I just recently had the problem that my icons did not load. I still think it's some kind of race condition as it does not happen if I wait with the login for a while after booting or if I restart X after it happened. But I don't know what causes it or how I could find out. Maybe even some special configuration on my side and not Ubuntus fault!?

philipp, do you happen to have >1 ubuntu systems? does this happen on any other ones? do you get any error messages when this happens? what about the logs (gnome-system-log)?

hi tim, can you give us some more info about this problem?
does it happen when you switch users, or also when you log out and then log in as a different user?
did anything go wrong during the upgrade?
could this be a problem with your graphics driver? what is your hardware? (lspci -nn)
which driver are you using with it?

Hi there, I experience this problem in Intrepid. Lately I will turn on my computer and the desktop icons will not load, though the panels do. I do not switch users at all, so I cannot test that. It most often happens after X crashes and I reboot, though sometimes it will happen independent of that.

The output of lspci -nn is:

Ian, your issue may be different from the one originally reported here. Can you please file a new bug report, against the xserver-xorg-video-intel package? Thank you.
