Bug Description

Graphical utility to change the Screen Resolution is no more available via menus in Hardy Heron (both Ubuntu and Xubuntu) release candidate as it was in beta release. I have to call this utility by using command window.
Hardware: Toshiba satellite Pro 6000, Celeron 1066 MHz, 384M RAM, HDD 80G Samsung.

I have the same problem with a Compaq Deskpro using an ATI 3D Rage card when doing dual install w. WindowsXP.
Maximum resolution w. no tinkering in xorg.conf gives a maximum resolution of 800*600. Monitor is a Packard Bell A927 - It should be detected correctly or ??
The monitor section of xorg.conf looks like:
Section "Monitor"
       Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection
The monitor is using horisontal and vertical scanning frequencies of 30-95 kHz /50-102 Hz.
Adding this information by hand makes the monitor behave as expected.
As I'm - on a small scale - promoting Ubuntu as a replacement for older versions of MS Windows on older hardware As Jo and Johan User can't be expected to tinker w. xorg.conf this undetection of older hardware worries me.

Running a live CD of 8.04 on a newer machine using a Samtron 94 monitor gives exactly the same problem - the screen is not correctly detected.
