Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-device-manager

I'm guessing gnome-device-manager has been removed from the default install in Hardy -- thats fine, to the average user its more confusing and intimidating than anything, and won't be useful one bit.

However, I do open it up from time to time and was surprised to see it gone after upgrading. An upgrade shouldn't remove packages you have installed unless they are deprecated and replaced, like gaim -> pidgin. Is there a replacement that I am missing?

Yeah, I just noticed it's gone too, bummer. I was hoping to look up what happened to my broadcom wireless card, and know I can't see if it's even recognized. This should have been installed, just not shown for regular users, and an option to show up for everyone else, or have it replaced by something more powerful.
my 2 cents

This should absolutely be in the default installation!

I have had many occasions where one of my friends have told me to re-install Windows on their machines. However they have no idea what's inside their grey boxes, so I have always relied to the device manager on my Ubuntu live cd. That way I can see the hardware and download the latest drivers to an usb stick.

If the device manager is not on the installation media, things get more complicated. After all, Windows only shows something like unknown pci device, which isn't helping one bit. And besides, it's never bad to know whats inside your computer. Out of curiosity if nothing else.

I believe that this package is of great use to all of mankind and doesn't harm anyone, so why is it not involved anymore in the default list of software is beyond me.

Mikko.

Confirming because it happens to several people. Does this happen with a newer Ubuntu version too?
