Bug Description

ubuntu-mate ships with those gsettings overrides:

$ dpkg -S /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/*mate*.override
mate-desktop-environment-core: /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/mate-ubuntu.gschema.override
ubuntu-mate-default-settings: /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/ubuntu-mate.gschema.override

A first note is if those two overrides can be merged into one, i.e. if mate-ubuntu.gschema.override can be dropped.

A second note is that those filenames should begin with nn_ numbers, so that it's easier for sysadmins and vendors to override them:
$ man glib-compile-schemas ==>
> By convention, vendor override files begin with nn_ where nn is a number from 00 to 99.
> Higher numbered files have higher priority (eg: if the same override is made in a file numbered
> 10 and then again in a file numbered 20, the override from 20 will take precedence).

This bug was fixed in the package mate-desktop-environment - 1.18.0+2

---------------
mate-desktop-environment (1.18.0+2) unstable; urgency=medium

  [ Martin Wimpress ]
  * Add/update packages.
  * debian/rules:
    + Conform to glib-compile-schema naming convention for overrides.
      (LP: #1577715)

  [ Mike Gabriel ]
  * debian/control:
    + Add C:/R: pair for caja-gksu to m-d-e-core. The caja-gksu package is about
      to be removed from Debian unstable and derivatives.
     + Bump Standards-Version: to 4.1.1. No changes needed.

---------------
ubuntu-mate-settings (18.04.1) bionic; urgency=medium

  * Add window buttons applet to Mutiny layout.
  * Conform to glib-compile-schema naming convention for overrides. (LP: #1577715)
  * Correct Super+L keybinding to lock the screen. (LP: #1728880)
  * Drop AppMenu integration for Firefox and Thunderbird. (LP: #1719134)
  * Use defaultPref() for Firefox defaults. (LP: #1721965) However, the
    defaultPref() functionality is broken due to this upstream bug report:
