Bug Description

When I boot ubuntu linux 8.10 on my acer aspire on with SSD sometimes the wrong appearance preference is chosen. The first one in the appearance list is chosen, but I use the default ubuntu human theme.

If I select the menu item preferences/appearance and the wrong theme has been selected (during start up) gnome is restarted. This bug has never happened on my stationary computer. Maybe this bug is related to it is a slower computer with a slower hard disk and loading appearance times out.

The bug doesn't happen on every start up, but maybe 50%.

This bug happens to me too with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 on a Dell Mini 9 with SSD. When the system boots the wrong theme appearance is chosen, but when I open the preferences/appereance dialog the settings return to the previously chosen ones, without any input from me. This bug happens very often, about half of the time.

This bug may be a duplicate (or at least related to) bug 521766

This bug has never happened to me after I bought netbooks with harddisks (faster) instead of SSD. I begin to suspect that this bug is because two processes compete to start and when using a faster disk, this always happens as expected.

I am no longer seeing this, having upgraded to Precise Beta.
