Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

After installing updates to Hardy beta on or around 1/APR/08 the login screen takes a long time to appear if you have Human List selected as your login screen. Everything goes well up until just after the usplash, at which point the graphical ui starts (light brown background, mouse works) but the 'hourglass'/spinning ball pointer just spins round and round for about 5 minutes. After this the login screen appears and everything is normal from then on. This occurs on every boot until the following workaround is put in place.

To workaround:

When it is stuck...
"Ctrl Alt F1
then login/pass
then :
- sudo killall gdm
- startx (without sudo)
- in gnome, just open a console and type "sudo gdm"
- come back to the first session (ctrl alt F7 if I remember)
- go to the menu System and in gnome session settings
- change the gdmgreeter to the default one (without the pictures)
- reboot"
(Thanks to Gaat on the forums)

Or:

-waiting the 5 mins for the system to start up
-Right clicking on your username on the top gnome panel
-Click Setup login screen
-Click the local tab
-Choose human instead of human list as your login screen
-Click close
-Restart

This thread deals with the problem and has a few confirmations:

Posts 6 and 9 detail the workaround.
