Bug Description
A new (minor) upstream version of the Ubuntu Font Family is being prepared, the main priority of which is the inclusion of the newly-assigned Indian Rupee Sign (U+20B9, bug #645987) which was assigned by Unicode very recently (2010-08-10), some other tweaks are being made to hinting based on initial feedback, but the intention here is to keep the changes simple and focused:

A new package will also pull in an updated version of the documentation for the Ubuntu Font Licence (of a dots-and-commas nature), and similar dots and commas changes to the midstream additions (used to produce the upstream .orig tarball):

Assuming no undetected regressions, the technical impact is likely to be low, but the social impact high (Ubuntu would become the first operating system shipped with working out-of-the-box support for this currency symbol; Indian is a large potential market and this help Ubuntu to serve them better.
The Indian government have expressed an intent to universally bring in use of the symbol within a six-month window and this is sooner than the timeframe for Ubuntu 11.04 (six months).
