kerneldetection exception when a custom kernel installed

I want to switch back from the nvidia driver to nouveau.

In the dialog the last row lets me select the Nouveau driver, but the "apply" button is inactive and doesnt let me apply the change.

There is also no message or anything that would allow me to understand, why this is the case, and what i could do about it.

oh and forgot to say: actiually the same goes for all other nvidia driver versions that are shown in the list - its about 10 of them.

Whatever i select, the apply button is inactive.

Another thing i just tried:

I thought *maybe* this problem is because I was running a custom built mainline kernel and the drivers GUI doesnt want to change a system with non-original Ubuntu kernel, but I just rebooted in the standard generic kernel and the problem persists.

OK, tracking down this stacktrace I found the problem:

it appears that kerneldetection.py fails when I have a custom built mainline package installed.
that would make this a bug in "ubuntu-drivers-common"

It appears to be irrelevant that I am *running* the standard Ubuntu generic kernel - the error occurs when I just have this kernel package installed, and it goes away when I remove it!

Maybe it doesnt happen with all custom packages, i have a slightly special name: linux-image-5.17.9-hs-custom-2022-05-22-a - I assumed when dpkg-deb can build it, this name is fine.

confirming my guess:

this error occurs when having somehow "exotic" linux-image-* package names - even thoug dpkg-deb can build them and dpkg is installing them without compaints, they lead to an error here.

A custom built mainline kernel without special naming can be installed without triggering the bug described here!

likely its the regular expression in Line 86 of kerneldetection.py that I am right now unable to improve...
the goal would probably be either to improve the expression to be able to deal with all legal package names, or give an error/exception that the kernel name/version could not be parsed.
