Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

I was looking for help with video editing and the info in this area is quite poor.
The page on wiki.ubuntu.com is very bad and hasnt been updated in a while.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ScreenCasts/VideoEditing
On help.ubuntu.com in the multimedia section it suggests two programs that are not well supported.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Multimedia
This entire help section should really be looked at by an expert in the field.

Good evening,

Thank you for posting this bug. Would you consider yourself better qualified to tackle both the wiki page and the help documentation?
I know I am not an expert, and I think part of the problem is there might not be anyone on the documentation team that could claim to be expert.

If you would like to attach an updated section I would commit it for you.

Jonathan

A few of the video editing software isnt actively maintained. I think that we should recommend Kino and pitivi because both are installable from the archive and are actively maintained. The others should be removed.

I edited the Wiki page for video editing and screencasts and I updated the entire page. I will make a revision to the ubuntu-docs too.

Ok here is a diff of my changes to the video editing and capture section. I wonder should add a section on screencasts as well?

Could someone commit this diff for me please.

Thanks for the patch Shane. A few comments / questions:

You need to rework this sentence a bit: "Most video editors also support video capture here are some". I'd suggest: "Most video editors also support video capture. Examples are:"

I don't know whether it is possible to distinguish more between the feature set of the different applications, so the user knows which to try first, but I'll leave that to someone who knows more about the applications.

Lastly, do you know anything about whether Cinelerra is worth recommending? It's not in the repositories but if it's good software, then we could encourage someone in the development team to get it into the repositories, and/or point to these instructions for the time being: http://cinelerra.org/getting_cinelerra.php#ubuntu

Hmm well I looked at the website and it doesnt seem to be actively maintained.

Ive reworked the sentence you suggested

Well there is a difference between the programs but I only really have experience with pitivi and kino. Id very much recommend pitivi because kino edits only .dv files the rest it has to convert from .avi to .dv and pitivi because its based on gstreamer can edit anything.

Would you prefer if I expanded it to recommend pitivi and explained the others a little more clearly?

Actually I got Cinelerra mixed up with another program that I removed. Ill put the link into the wiki for it.
I removed it originally because I thought that stuff not in the archive shouldnt be recommended.

Hello

I am a developer on the OpenShot video editor project and I am developing all the documentation for that.

I have performed a very extensive study of the video editors available and would be able to undertake to write some knowledgeable and informative documentation for this.

I have plenty of experience in publishing works in this field. Here is an example of one of my publications on developing methods for automated visual recognition from digital video images:

http://plankt.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/18/3/393

On that project I had to develop all my own software for doing the processing, analysis and rendering.

I agree that it needs work in that the index isn't so comprehensive, and the wiki article and the index are not consistent. It could use some work.

Closing this old bug, since it discusses the quality of wiki pages which anybody can edit.

Due to the nature of the wikis, you can't request changes to them in the form of bug reports.
